De-mystifying the Road Transport Process

Road Transport

Logistics can be a tricky concept to get ones’ head around. Everyone’s seen a courier or truck in action at some point – picking up, carrying, or delivering a consignment. But what actually happens from when the goods are picked up and until they get delivered? That’s almost the same as asking “…how long is a piece of string?” For same-metro deliveries, (i.e. the pick-up and drop-off location are in the same city) there’s typically not much more to it than meets the eye; usually such deliveries are picked up on the same day, this is both convenient for the customer, and saves the transport company from having to store the goods overnight. With long distance deliveries it’s an entirely different story, with the two key differences being that:

  1. The consignment will then often stay overnight in one or more “depots” while en-route

  2. In most cases, the courier vehicle which is used to pick up the consignment will not be the same as the one used to deliver the consignment.

The unloading and reloading of goods between vehicles and in and out of depots, necessitates extra care in the packing and preparing of goods for transportation. Boxes, pallets and other items need to be firmly packaged, both in order to protect their contents, and to themselves be sufficiently protected from damage in transit; this is standard advice provided to individuals who plan to send and pack something bulky or fragile, for the first time.

The staff at Freight Quote are skilled in breaking down the factors affecting road transport into simple concepts, so that their customers understand what is required to make the transportation of their bulky goods as problem-free as possible.

Providing a Courier Quote or a Freight Estimate

If you’ve never needed to get a courier quote before, you may have no idea what it costs to move your bulky items – that is until you’ve been in touch with Freight Quote. There are a few key factors which affect freight quotes:

  1. The size (dimensions) of the goods

  2. The individual and combined weight

  3. The distance the goods will need to travel

  4. The pickup location and delivery location

  5. How the goods will be loaded and unloaded

Almost every consignment is different, and once you understand a bit about how freight works, it will be easier to understand how seemingly courier quote requests can result in very different quotes.
